Miami Dade College Campuses Celebrate Purple Heart Day Aug. 7
Miami, August 3, 2012 - In order to honor veterans who have been wounded or killed in battle, Miami Dade College (MDC) will celebrate Purple Heart Day on August 7 with various activities throughout its campuses.
The events include the following:
Hialeah Campus
9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Student Foyer on the first floor of the main instructional building
The Hialeah Campus will conduct an awareness campaign that will include posters, the distribution of bookmarks and a documentary series that will be featured throughout the campus. The video documentaries will illustrate the history, meaning and recipients of the Purple Heart and include Made in America: The Purple Heart, Purple Heart Wounded Warriors and The Purple Heart.
Homestead Campus
11 a.m. to 1p.m.
Café Patio
Celebrating the American Hero – the U.S. Army ROTC will provide an interactive snapshot of the experience of the American soldier while showcasing the leadership and educational components of the military. A Purple Heart flag will also be erected to honor heroes and commemorate this occasion.
InterAmerican Campus
9:00 a.m. to Noon
Building 1 Breezeway
Student Life at the InterAmerican Campus will be hosting a bake sale from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Proceeds from the bake sale will be used to sponsor veterans and their spouses to attend the annual convention of the Military Order of the Purple Heart of the United States of America. Information will be distributed about local veteran organizations and opportunities for involvement.
Kendall Campus
Noon to 1 p.m.
Building 3 and Peace Pole
Commemorative wreath will be placed at the Peace Pole. Student Life will distribute purple ribbons to students, faculty, and staff. Attendees will be able to write the names of wounded or deceased friends or family veterans on a banner of recognition. The banner will be displayed in front of the Koffee House.
Medical Campus
On Monday, August 6 and Tuesday, August 7, the Medical Campus will have awareness posters and flyers around the campus, and purple ribbons will be given out to students, faculty and staff.
North Campus
August 6, 9 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Room 2101-08
Student leaders will educate incoming North Campus students on the importance of Purple Heart Day through an interactive presentation. Students will be asked to have a moment of silence for those who have served. A commemorative wreath will be placed on display in the Campus Library and a symbolic purple ribbon and informational booklet will be provided to all attendees.
West
MDC West will be creating posters to display famous recipients of the Purple Heart and handing out ribbons to students on campus while informing them of the day’s importance. A wreath honoring all recipients of the Purple Heart will also be on display.
Wolfson Campus
Noon to 1 p.m.
Room 2106
The Wolfson Campus will be hosting a school supply campaign for the children of both wounded and fallen soldiers as a gesture of gratitude for their service to this country. The campaign will culminate at a ceremony where the donation will be presented to a local Veteran's Association. The ceremony will also include a discussion about the importance of Purple Heart Day and a moment of silence for those who have served.
The Purple Heart is awarded to any member of the Armed Forces who has been wounded or killed, died as a result of a wound in battle, or otherwise designated by the President of the United States.
