Miami Dade College’s Renowned School for Advanced Studies to Hold Information Sessions Sept. 29 and Oct. 13
Miami, September 27, 2012 - Starting on Saturday, Sept. 29, the School for Advanced Studies (SAS) at Miami Dade College (MDC) will host four information/application sessions for tenth-graders interested in the accelerated college studies program for the 2013-14 school year. The sessions will be available at four MDC campuses: Homestead, Kendall, North, and Wolfson.
SAS is a full-time, nationally-recognized, dual-enrollment program where students complete high school and college credit courses simultaneously. All district tenth grade students with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are invited to apply, and may be admitted for eleventh grade upon passing the college placement test (PERT) administered by MDC. Students attending SAS complete their last two years of high school while attending MDC and, in many cases, simultaneously graduate with both a high school diploma and an Associate in Arts degree from MDC. This year, 80 percent of SAS students obtained a college diploma.
Student selection is based solely on the order in which applications are submitted, subject to applicants meeting the established criteria, until enrollment limit is reached. Each semester, students enroll in a minimum of three college dual-enrollment courses taught by MDC faculty and four high school courses, taught by SAS faculty. All high school courses are Advanced Placement courses, except for Pre-calculus and Research. Students receive free tuition and fees, free textbooks, and, if eligible, school bus and Metrorail transportation funded by Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
