tournee1

Miami, September 24, 2012 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Tower Theater and l’Alliance Française South Florida will resume their popular French Cinema Series starting Friday, October 5, 2012 and will run the first Friday of every month through June 2013.

Titled “Movies are for the Big Screen” (Le Cinéma est pour le Grand Écran), the series will showcase films that are currently available only for theatrical exhibition. The series will offer cheerful, poetic and controversial French films, including the classic The Silence of the Sea (Le silence de la mer) directed by Jean Pierre Melville, whose independence and personal style of filmmaking were a major influence on the film movement known as the French New Wave that revolutionized the cinema and the film industry; and Angels of the Streets (Les anges du péché) directed by Robert Bresson, often referred to as the most highly regarded French filmmaker after Jean Renoir.

The series opens at 6 :30 p.m. Friday, October 5, with the recently produced film On Tour (Tournée), directed by renowned actor Mathieu Amalric (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Cosmopolis, Chicken with Plums), and winner of the Best Director prize at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. It has never been commercially released in the U.S.

This is the second year that the Tower Theater and l´Alliance Française South Florida collaborate on the series. Film exhibition rights have been acquired by l´Alliance Française South Florida, with the support of the Institut Français and the cultural services of the French Embassy.

Tickets are $7 for general admission and $6, Alliance Française members, MDC students and staff, and Tower Theater and Miami Film Society Members.

MDC’s Tower Theater has been dubbed as one of the “10 great places to see a movie in splendor” by USA Today.
