Miami, October 24, 2012 - Miami Dade College’s The Reporter has been named the top community college student newspaper in the State for the second straight year.

The Reporter staff placed in 15 of 18 individual categories – including eight first-place awards – at the recent Florida College System Activities Association awards banquet in Daytona Beach. The paper has won 32 awards from the FCSAA in the past two years including 18 first-place honors.

This year’s competition was based on newspapers printed during the 2011-12 school year. The Reporter accumulated 34 overall points.

“I feel immensely proud of everyone for placing first in the state,” said Karla Barrios, the editor-in-chief of The Reporter. “It is such an honor to lead a hardworking staff that puts forth the utmost effort every day to make our newspaper the best it can be. I know the future holds continued success for The Reporter as we continue to improve.”

Monique O. Madan, who served as editor-in-chief of The Reporter last year, received an inner circle award for placing in the top three in at least three categories.

Madan won two first-place awards: News Story and Feature Story and, a second-place award for In-Depth Reporting. She has received six FCSAA awards in the past two years including four first place honors.

The Reporter features 16 pages, prints on a biweekly schedule, has a circulation of 10,250 per print cycle, and is supplemented by a website with video and audio content. It is distributed at all eight MDC campuses and has newsrooms at the North, Wolfson and the Kendall campuses.
