MDC Hosts Community Events for Hispanic Heritage Month
Miami, October 2, 2012 - As the national leader in enrolling the most Hispanic students, the month of October is particularly exciting for the students, faculty, staff and community at Miami Dade College (MDC). This month, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, MDC’s eight campuses will host a wide variety of events including lectures, exhibitions, live performances, food tastings, and more. Most of the events are free unless otherwise noted and are open to the public. Some events may require advanced registration.
Here are some highlights from this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month events:

An exhibit of U.S. National Archives photos taken by U.S. government agencies of images showing various aspects of Hispanic Heritage.

The Hispanic Americans – A Film Presentation
Actors Jimmy Smits and Hector Elizondo discuss the cultural differences among Hispanics in the United States. The film shows that Hispanic ethnicity covers a wide range of cultural backgrounds.

Wednesday, October 3 - Noon – 1 p.m.
Around the Hispanic World in 80 Plates
This opening ceremony will feature a medley of dance performances by The Miami All Stars from America’s GotTalent. Attendees will learn about different nationalities as they savor the foods of the Hispanic World.

Aging in the Hispanic Community
Ms. Josefina G. Carbonell, Senior Vice President/Long Term Care & Nutrition, Independent Living Systems LLC, and former Assistant Secretary for Aging at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under former U.S. President George W. Bush, will discuss disease trends among Hispanics, cultural considerations and tips and strategies for caring for an aging loved one with a chronic illness or disease, and more.

“La Isla en Peso”
A celebration of the centennial of Cuban author Virgilio Piñera, including an art exhibition running through Oct. 25 by Mariana Altamirano and theatrical performance by Altamirano, Orlando Core Fernandez, Edgar Hernández, Izzy Martínez, and Leonardo Navarro. The performance will take place at 11:30 in Room 3103

A presentation by Professor Henry Lares on the cultural and historical looks of Florida’s Mediterranean architecture in its most memorable forms.

El Día de la Raza
A celebration of “El Día de la Raza,” commemorating the first encounter of Europeans and Native Americans. This historical overview of the cultural influence of Spain in the Dominican Republic includes live performances, arts and crafts, and a complimentary tasting of Dominican food. Now the Dominican Republic, Quisqueya, the western region of the island of Hispaniola, was one of the first European settlements in the New World. Quisqueya is also the land of Enriquillo, one of the first great heroes of the Americas, who rebelled against the Spaniards and signed a treaty granting the native population rights of freedom and property, among others.

The Cuban Missile Crisis and Its Impact on the Caribbean and South Florida: A 50-year Retrospective
Learn about how this incident that brought the United States and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear warfare had a longterm impact on Cuba, Puerto Rico and other countries in the Caribbean, as well as on South Florida. Panelists will include Dr. Manuel Rodríguez, professor of history at the University of Puerto Rico; Dr. Michael Lenaghan, MDC professor of political science at North Campus, Dr. Paul George, MDC professor of history at Wolfson Campus, and Mr. Ramiro Inguanzo, MDC adjunct professor of political science at Wolfson Campus.
