Miami, October 9, 2012 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School Engineering and Technology was recently awarded more than $122,000 by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to provide scholarships for students entering the second year of MDC’s celebrated Electrical Power Technology Program to cultivate and strengthen the local workforce.

This year, through the NRC grant, 26 students in the program received $3,700 each, which will significantly reduce their financial burden and allow them to move more quickly through the program and into the workforce.

MDC’s Electrical Power Technology Program is in partnership with the Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and provides a comprehensive education in power plant operations and technologies, leading to an Associate in Science degree. Students also gain hands-on experience through a paid summer internship at FPL’s Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant. Upon graduating, they receive full-time job offers at the plant or at an FPL substation.

Since the program’s inception five years ago, 94 graduates have been hired or advanced within FPL. Students in the program choose to major in one of the following areas: instrumentation and controls, electrical maintenance, mechanical maintenance, and the new specialization in transmission and substation. Program classes are held at MDC’s Homestead Campus.
