Mayors' Day for Recognition of National Service
Miami, April 5, 2013 -
Miami Dade College
’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus will host the Mayors’ Day for Recognition of National Service, Tuesday, April 9, from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. The College and Miami-Dade County will join the national initiative of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the Corporation for National & Community Service (CNCS), and National League of Cities, to highlight the impact of national service on solving local community problems. Mayors from across the country will participate in this national event to not only underscore the impact national service has in their cities, but also to thank the members of the Armed Forces, past and present, for their contribution to the welfare of this country.
The free event – open to the public – will emphasize the importance of citizen service, show support for nonprofit and national service groups, recognize the role national service members play in focusing community volunteers, and inspire more residents to serve in their communities. It will also include speeches from leaders, CNCS representatives, non-profit organizations, and national service members about the role and impact of national service as a cost-effective strategy to address city challenges in our community. Other activities include workshops and art sessions.
According to the CNCS, in Miami-Dade County, national service programs and participants are making a difference by tutoring students, helping children learn to read, increasing economic opportunity, and building capacity in non-profit organizations. More than 18,000 people of all ages and backgrounds are helping to meet local needs, strengthen communities, and increase civic engagement through national service throughout the state of Florida.
