Miami Dade College North Campus to Host Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s Ready to Lead Student Conference

Actor and R2L Spokesperson, Wilmer Valderrama, to Speak at Conference

CHCI Conference 2012

Miami, May 14, 2013 - Miami Dade College (MDC) is looking to inspire high school students to continue their education. North Campus will play host to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s (CHCI) college readiness program, Ready to Lead (R2L), Saturday, May 18, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Actor & R2L Spokesperson Wilmer Valderama will address the attendees.

Some 300 local high school students will receive invaluable information on planning for college, financing their education, and leadership development. R2L’s goal is to help Hispanic students pursue a post-secondary education by motivating them to complete high school, empowering them to serve and lead in their communities, and instilling in them a strong sensibility to earn a college degree. CHCI’s signature “Mentoring Power Hour” will serve as the venue for MDC student leaders, CHCI alumni and local professionals to connect with these high school students to discuss and share information about personal and civic responsibility.

“North Campus and CHCI will once again join hands to deliver a strong charge to our community’s youth, focused on college completion, civic and personal responsibility,” said MDC North Campus President, Dr. José A. Vicente. “Our resolve is to provide early college planning and related leadership enrichment aimed at furthering opportunities for successful college and career attainment on the part of our youth.”

North Campus will also be hosting an EXPO to give students and parents the opportunity to discuss with faculty and student leaders, MDC's 300+ academic pathways leading to Associate’s and Bachelor’s degree programs. Comprehensive information on the College's American Dream Scholarship will also be available.

This is CHCI’s fifth consecutive year hosting Miami R2L at North Campus. Actors Tony Plana and Wilmer Valderrama have spoken at the College in the past; both guest celebrities are passionate presenters and advocates for education.
