Miami Dade College Continues to Make Voting Easy and Accessible to Students, Faculty, and Staff

Known as Democracy’s College, it’s no surprise that when it comes to involving students in the democratic process, Miami Dade College (MDC) is leading the way.
MDC was one of the first colleges in the nation to sign on to TurboVote, a web-based system that allows students to register, request absentee ballots, and receive reminders before every election.
The process is simple and takes just a few moments to complete. By visiting the website, students, faculty, and staff can register to vote, request an absentee ballot, and sign up to receive reminders via email and text of upcoming local, state, and national elections. TurboVote even sends students self-addressed stamped envelopes to mail their voter registration and absentee ballot request forms to the Department of Elections.
Last year, more than 3,000 MDC students registered during the pilot phase, making it the second-highest in the nation among all colleges. Recently, MDC President Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón joined Senator Bob Graham and Congressman Lou Frey, as well as other college presidents from across the nation, to launch the New Standard for Campus Voter Engagement (http://newstandard.turbovote.org). The initiative states that every college should provide each student with all the information and materials that he or she needs to vote in every election, from local to presidential, and every college should designate an individual to lead efforts to institutionalize voter registration on their campus.
“I’m proud to have been designated by Dr. Padrón to help MDC increase voter engagement in each of our seven campuses and two centers,” said Josh Young, director of MDC’s Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy. “We recently held a college-wide planning meeting with students, faculty, and staff and are working hard to infuse TurboVote into key processes that students need to pass through such as orientation, registration, etc., so every student has the opportunity to participate. Our college-wide plan will be implemented this fall to promote TurboVote even more.”
In 2012, more than 194,000 Americans signed up for TurboVote through their partnerships with 58 colleges, 29 nonprofits, and Google. By creating a single online site where a user can sign up once and get all the information and materials he or she needs to vote in every election, TurboVote helps make it easy and affordable for colleges to reach The New Standard.
