Miami Dade College Student Renee Lambert Wins Jed Foundation’s National Essay Contest on Suicide Prevention
Miami, January 23, 2014 -
Miami Dade College (MDC) student Renee Lambert is a winner of the Jed Foundation’s national essay contest on suicide prevention. Her essay, which detailed how the foundation’s seven-step suicide prevention model has influenced her life and outlook on social work, was selected among a host of entries and is a shining example of how MDC students continue to excel at the national level.
“It was a short essay and it was from my heart,” stated Lambert, who currently interns for MDC’s Suicide Prevention Coalition, which is funded by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
“Renee has provided excellent assistance for this grant. She is friendly, energetic, enthusiastic, and always helpful,” said MDC’s Suicide Prevention Grant Coordinator Rita Tybor.
MDC’s Social Work program, like other disciplines, strives to give students well-rounded experience in their prospective fields. An aspiring social worker, Lambert anticipates graduating this summer with dual associate degrees in Addiction Studies and Social Work.
“I did not think that I would be getting as much experience as I am,” stated the 32-year-old. “When I thought of addiction studies and social work I was thinking that I would end up being a counselor. But working with Rita has shown me that I don't have to counsel to be in this field. There are areas, such as grant writing, grant managing, event planning, administration, etc. that would need somebody as energetic and creative as I am.”
In addition to recognition from the foundation, Lambert will receive an Amazon.com gift card.
