Eight MDC Students to Participate in U.S.-Brazil Connect Fellowship

Miami, March 11, 2014 - A group of Miami Dade College (MDC) students will spend part of their summer in South America’s largest country as part of the U.S.-Brazil Connect Fellowship. These eight students recently toasted their trip in a celebratory event, alongside the organizers of this first-of-its-kind joint venture for MDC.

The program links U.S. and Brazilian students in a transformative cross-cultural learning experience. Serving as ambassadors of MDC and the U.S., the students will create a fun English immersion environment for the selected group of students during the 20-week program. In exchange for their leadership, they will receive lodging, meals, local transportation, insurance coverage, and a stipend.

The MDC students, hailing from Kendall, North, InterAmerican, Wolfson, and Medical campuses, are expected to participate in a rigorous preparation program combining online and in-person training, before departing for their four-week stay in Brazil. Once there, they will interact with other students four to six hours a day, leading project-based groups, facilitating interaction of small groups, and working as a collaborative team member with other students and the team leadership. Upon their return to the U.S., they will continue online communication and support of their Brazilian students for eight weeks.

The selected MDC students had to meet a series of qualifications before they were accepted into the program, including a minimum 3.0 GPA, completed at least 12 college credits, excellent writing, reading, and oratory skills in English, and a desire to learn about Brazil and develop skills in global leadership, among other criteria. They also went through two rounds of interviews prior to finally being accepted into this prestigious program.
