Miami Dade College Students Win Top Prize at Local Professional Trade Show
MDC Students Cynthia Rondon, Karine Mompremier, and Nicole Tenhagen
Miami, March 14, 2014 -
Three Miami Dade College (MDC) Kendall Campus students from Associate Professor Senior Marcia Lopes de Mello’s Interior Design 4 studio took home all three awards recently at the IIDA – International Interior Design Association SunCon Student Challenge for designing an eco-friendly reception and waiting room of a pediatric oncology outpatient clinic. Sophomores Cynthia Rondon, the first-place winner, was awarded $1000 and an iPad; Karine Mompremier and Nicole Tenhagen won honorable mentions for their creations, along with an iPad. The interior design students beat out competitors from six other Florida schools. This is the first time that MDC School of Architecture and Interior Design students participate.
The students submitted presentation boards displaying drawings, materials and furniture selections as part of a curricular design project and of a GSELS - Global Sustainability and Earth Literacy Studies assignment. Projects were required to promote relaxation and distractions to the patients with a therapeutic color palette and sustainable, green furniture with low maintenance costs. The project also had to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and relate design and health.
