From South America to Europe and beyond, Miami Dade College (MDC) students are encouraged to see the world as they learn. Next spring, from April 29 to May 29, 2012, MDC will offer a dynamic study abroad program titled Economic Awakenings: China. This program is designed for students who wish to learn about economics in the context of globalization. It begins with two seminars on campus prior to departure for Shanghai. While in China, students will study macro and micro economics, visit historic sites, and participate in cultural activities.

Kedar Souffrant, a stellar student in Miami Dade College’s (MDC) renowned School of Engineering and Technology, was recently selected by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its Technical Operations - Collegiate Training Initiative (TO-CTI) program. The prestigious pipeline program will enable Soufrrant to work part time as a technical operations intern at an FAA facility in Miami for the duration of her studies at MDC. The Department of Natural and Social Sciences at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) InterAmerican Campus (IAC) was recently awarded a Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP) grant to train minority students, especially women, to earn a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) degree. MDC is among only 12 colleges and universities nationwide to receive the grant, which has a total disbursement of $2.9 million for fiscal 2012. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan made the official announcement earlier this fall, and MDC will begin implementation of the grant in January 2012.

Miami Dade College (MDC) has been awarded a two-year grant from Campus Compact, a non-profit coalition of nearly 1,200 college and university presidents who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education, to launch Connect2Complete (C2C), a peer advocacy initiative to help community college students stay in school and graduate. C2C also aims to increase student civic engagement and leadership in the college and community. MDC is one of only three institutions in the state selected to pilot the Campus Compact-funded project, which is supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The MDC Center for Community Involvement, in partnership with Florida Campus Compact, will launch the project at the Wolfson Campus in the 2012 spring term. Miami, Oct. 13, 2011 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will soon offer a new Bachelor of Science with a major in Early Childhood Education (BS-ECE) to meet the local demand for trained Early Childhood Education professionals in South Florida, thanks to unanimous approval from the Florida Board of Education.
The college’s renowned School of Education (SOE) will begin offering a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education in fall 2012. This program will be the seventh state-approved teacher education program in the SOE and will offer its graduates professional teacher certification in Birth to Age 4 and Age 3 to Grade 3, with endorsements in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Reading, and Pre-Kindergarten disabilities.

This fall, aspiring writers will have the opportunity to learn technique and get publishing advice when The Center of Literature and Theatre @ Miami Dade College (MDC), (formerly known as the Florida Center for the Literary Arts), presents its prestigious Miami Writers Institute for the second time this year. The fall version of this spring staple runs Wednesday, Nov. 16 through Friday, Nov. 18 during Miami Book Fair International at the Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami. This three-day conference features comprehensive courses that focus on craft and publishing, additionally, participants may sign up for one-on-one manuscript consultations with industry professionals. A group of Miami Dade College (MDC) Kendall Campus students and their professor are enjoying the success their film project, Play Dead, is receiving this year. Thanks to exposure at two film festivals earlier this year, their film project has been nominated for “Best Short” at the Nice Fantastic International Film Festival in Nice, France. The judging will take place Oct. 29-30 in France. The film will also be screened in March 2012, at Scotland’s Dead By Dawn International Film Festival, the most popular horror film festival in Europe.

At a signing ceremony today, Miami Dade College (MDC) formally welcomed the renowned Cintas Fellows Collection, the largest collection anywhere of Cuban art outside of Cuba. On an extended loan to MDC by the Cintas Foundation, the collection is comprised of nearly 300 pieces by artists of Cuban descent who have received prestigious Cintas Fellowships, awarded since 1963.

Harvard University, the nation’s oldest and most recognized higher education institution, and Miami Dade College (MDC), the nation’s largest and one of the most respected institutions of higher education, have created a partnership that will allow MDC students every year to attend the Latino Leadership Initiative (LLI) at Harvard. The LLI will take place from June 25 through July 3, 2011, at which time students will work with an intensive curriculum that will help them develop critical leadership skills, and will equip them with tools for success in academics and business. Several sessions will also provide students the opportunity to interact with major national leaders who will share their own personal stories and leadership trajectories. The ultimate goal is for MDC to implement an LLI in Florida with the participating students leading the process.
