Miami Dade College Interns Excel in Year Up Program, Geared to Closing the Opportunity Divide

As part of the national Year Up initiative, Miami Dade College (MDC) students continue to excel in the program’s Professional Training Corps. (PTC). In Year Up’s first year at MDC, dozens of students received extensive business etiquette training and were placed in full-time professional internships, where all of the participating employers recently gave them high marks for their work performance. Year Up students are now ready to complete their degrees at MDC and embark on a successful future.

Miami Dade College Students Once Again Chosen to Participate in the Latino Leadership Initiative at Harvard University

Five Miami Dade College (MDC) students will trade their swimsuits for school books this summer, as they head north to Massachusetts. This group of up-and-coming leaders will travel to Harvard to attend the prestigious Latino Leadership Initiative (LLI), to adopt skills that will help them both academically and professionally. They will then take what they’ve learned while at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and implement those projects in their own communities. The program takes place June 8 – 15.

CINTAS Foundation and MDC Museum of Art + Design Announce 2013 Fellowship Competition; Program Celebrates 50th Year

The Miami Dade College (MDC) Museum of Art + Design and the CINTAS Foundation have announced the May 20th kickoff of the 2013 CINTAS Foundation Fellowship Competition. Miami Dade College’s Early Childhood Education Program Receives NAEYC’s Full Accreditation

Miami Dade College (MDC) School of Education recently received full accreditation from the prestigious National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) for its four Associate in Science in Early Childhood Education (AS-ECE) programs: general, infant/toddler, preschool, and education administration. Miami Dade College’s Virtual Humanities Course Wins Awards from US Distance Learning Association and Blackboard Inc.

In an effort to make humanities just as alive and engaging online as it is in the classroom, a team of Miami Dade College (MDC) faculty and staff gave the course an interactive redesign, which has not only won over students but also the prestigious United States Distance Learning Association’s (USDLA) Award. The redesigned course recently won the Gold Award for the USDLA International Awards competition in the category for Best Practices for Excellence in Distance Learning Teaching. The course also won a Catalyst Award for Exemplary Course Program from Blackboard Inc.

MDC Architecture Students Win Award for Peace Center Design; Innovative Model Brings Worlds Together in Harmonic Setting

MDC Baseball Team Clinches 2013 Southern Conference Title

The Miami Dade College (MDC) Baseball team has clinched the 2013 Southern Conference Championship. The team is currently ranked No. 2 in the latest FCSAA Region VIII Baseball Poll with a record of 32-6, 16-3 in conference. As of the April 10th NJCAA National Poll, the Sharks rank 11th in the nation. The MDC Baseball team has scored 328 runs, batted in 289 RBI’s, and has.358 batting average.

Miami Dade College, a Long-Time Advocate for Immigration Reform, Urges Other Presidents of Higher Education to Follow Suit

President Eduardo J. Padrón of Miami Dade College (MDC) joined forces with two other major college presidents in drafting an open letter to more than 1,200 university and college presidents, urging their fellow leaders in higher education to join them in pushing for smart immigration policies that will help attract and retain the world’s best and brightest. Padrón and the presidents of Cornell University and Arizona State University stressed the U.S. often trains the most talented foreign-born students in its top educational institutions, only to send them overseas to compete against us in the global marketplace because our immigration system does not provide an opportunity for them to stay. The letter also noted that many children who were brought here at a young age are prevented from attending college because of their undocumented, immigration status.

King Calle is known for his extraordinary ability to play bebop, Latin and contemporary jazz, and pop, and has lent his singular sound to Grammy award-winning albums by Frank Sinatra, Juan Luis Guerra, Arturo Sandoval, and Jon Secada, as well as on numerous television and motion-picture soundtracks. In fact, he has been nominated multiple times for Grammys.

MDC Museum of Art + Design Presents Arnold Mesches: A Life’s Work

The Miami Dade College (MDC) Museum of Art + Design (MOAD) will present Arnold Mesches: A Life’s Work, a major retrospective-style exhibition spanning 60 years of work by renowned American painter Arnold Mesches. Mesches most comprehensive and inclusive retrospective to date will open with a reception at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Museum of Art + Design located in MDC’s historic Freedom Tower. There will also be a gallery talk and book signing at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14. The exhibition, reception and lecture are free and open to the public.
