The Miami Dade College Lady Sharks Volleyball team played this weekend in Hillsborough’s Annual Halloween Tournament, where they won three out of the four matches they played. The Lady Sharks first played Florida College and won 3-1 (25-11,22-25,25-12,25-17). During this game, sophomore Wendy Romero had 14 kills and 12 digs. Also during this game, sophomore Kayla Dowdell stood out with 9 kills and 7 digs. In the second game, they lost to Iowa Western Community College 2-3 (25-21,21-25,20-25,25-12,12-15). Though they ultimately lost the game, several Lady Sharks performed impressively: Romero had 28 kills, 26 digs, and 2 block assists; freshman Silvia Galeano posted 12 kills, 12 digs, and 2 block assists; sophomore Stephanie Hernandez ruled the court with 29 digs; and sophomore Transfer Haley Foote led the team in assists with 36.
On Saturday, the Lady Sharks recovered from the loss and beat Polk State College, 3-0 (25-20,25-21,25-14) and followed up with a victory again No. 4 Hillsborough Community College, 3-2 (25-22,18-25,25-16,24-26,15-10), closing out the tournament on a high note. Dowdell led the team in kills with 17 and also recorded 8 digs, and 4 block assist. Romero added 14 kills, 26 digs, 1 block, and 2 block assists. Hernandez closed out with 32 digs and Foote added 34 assists.
The Lady Sharks have officially completed their regular season play with an overall record of 21-5 and an undefeated conference record (8-0). Now the Sharks will be preparing for the FCSAA State Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla., November 8-10. They are set to play on Friday, November 8th at 1 p.m. against Mid-Florida.
