Shark baseball at Nationals

Date Published: 05/28/2014

The MDC Sharks baseball team jumped out to an early lead and never let go, beating Blinn College 11-2 at the JUCO World Series.

The hits started early and came often as MDC drove in five runs in just the first inning, including an RBI triple by Mandy Alvarez. Nick Bateman, stepping in for injured center fielder Jose Gomez, fought through an 11-pitch at-bat and added to the score on an inside-the-park homerun, pushing the Sharks’ lead to 7-1. Bryan Colon delivered the coup-de-grâce on a two-run homer to deep right field, ending the game in the eighth inning on a run rule. Freshman Darren Seferina stood out again with three runs, two hits, an RBI and two stolen bases.

Not to be outdone by the offensive fireworks, pitcher Marcos Barrios (8-2) put in more than seven innings of work and silenced the Blinn bats, striking out six, walking one and allowing just two runs.

"Credit their starting pitcher," said Blinn coach Harvey McIntyre after watching Barrios limit his team to seven hits. "He competed and did a great job and didn't crack."

Next up, the team faces off against Iowa Western – the only other undefeated team in the tournament – Wednesday (May 28) at 9:30 p.m.
