Child Development and Education
 

The Associate in Science (A.S.) Degree in Child Development and Education (Program 27014) is designed to provide students with training for employment opportunities in the field of Early Childhood Education. These employment opportunities include working with young children in pre-kindergarten programs, preschool programs, child care centers, family child care homes, Head Start centers, and public and private programs for young children.

The Child Development and Education Program is a degree program leading to an Associate in Science Degree after the completion of sixty-three (63) academics credits. The requirements for the Child Development Associate (CDA) Equivalency Credential are included within the program.

The Early Childhood courses combine classroom instruction and field work experience with an emphasis on developmentally appropriate programming for young children. Selected early childhood centers and public school pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms are used for field experience sites. Two of the MDC campuses have lab schools where you can satisfy your required field experience: the pre-school labs are located at the North and Wolfson campuses.

 
The Child Development and Education Program includes the following:

1) 12 credits in Early Childhood Education

  • EEC 1000 - Introduction to Early Childhood Education
  • EEC 1200 - Early Childhood Curriculum I
  • EEC 1311 - Early Childhood Curriculum II
  • EEC 2202 - Program Development in Early Childhood Education

2) 36 credits in general education requirements
3)
15 credits in Elementary / Early Childhood Education courses

The specific degree requirements are listed on the Child Development and Education advisement sheet. Students completing the course requirements for this degree will also receive the
Associate in Arts (AA) Degree in Teaching Pre-Elementary
(Program 10809).
 
CDA-E COURSE REQUIREMENTS: (for students wishing to obtain this credential ONLY)

Completion of the following courses with a "C" or better:

EEC 1000: Introduction to Early Childhood Education
EEC 1200: Early Childhood Curriculum I
EEC 1311: Early Childhood Curriculum II
EEC 2202: Program Development in Early Childhood Education
EDG 2943: Educational Service Field Work*

*480 hours of direct experience working with children ages 0-5, completion of Professional Resource File, and Department of Children and Families mandated training
