Renowned Miami Dade College Chess Team places fourth in prestigious Pan American Chess Tournament

Miami, December 31, 2007 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) renowned chess team is advancing to the Final Four Chess Tournament for the sixth straight year after placing fourth at the Pan American Chess Tournament, which was hosted at the college from Dec. 26 to 30.
 
“We had a very tough match against the University of Texas at Dallas, one of the best teams in the country, but were able to get a draw which secured us a fourth place finish,” said Dr. Rene Garcia, the chess team’s advisor. “Once again, the team played its heart out and I am very proud of each player.”
 
Led by team captain and grandmaster-elect, Renier Gonzalez, MDC lost only one match to the University of Maryland at Baltimore County had two draws and three wins for four points. The four top finishers at the Pan American and qualifiers for college’s top chess tourney, the Final Four Tournament this spring, were:

1. University of Texas at Dallas
2. University of Maryland at Baltimore County
3. New York University
4. Miami Dade College
