MDC’s Outgoing Medical Center Campus Interim President and Retired Provost to Receive the 2008 Health Care Heroes AXA Advisors Lifetime Achievement Award from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce
Miami, February 25, 2008 -
Miami Dade College’s (MDC) outgoing Medical Center Campus interim president and retired provost for operations, Dr. Kathie Sigler, will receive the 2008 Health Care Heroes AXA Advisors Lifetime Achievement Award from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce at a luncheon on Thursday, May 1, 2008. It is the highest award the Chamber bestows on an individual who, over their lifetime, has made a significant impact on or changed the history of the health care industry in South Florida.
Dr. Sigler enjoyed a four decade career at MDC where she held numerous faculty and administrative positions including Medical Center Campus president, provost for operations, dean for administration, founding chief information officer, and professor. She retired in 2006. However, she was asked to return to the College in 2007 to serve as interim president of the Medical Center Campus during a search for a new campus president, and, recently, retired again as Dr. Anita Kaplan, the new campus president, began her tenure. Throughout her career, Dr. Sigler earned a reputation of being a builder of programs and consensus, a tireless advocate for the Medical Center Campus, and a champion of technology. In addition to her duties at MDC, Dr. Sigler also served on numerous community and public boards, both locally and nationally, including the Miami-Dade Public Health Trust.
“I am so honored to receive this recognition and accept it on behalf of all those I served during my career at MDC; all the amazing colleagues and students who are the real heroes,” said Dr. Sigler. “I am just fortunate I had the opportunity to spend nearly my entire professional career at an organization without equal, Miami Dade College.”
Dr. Sigler is the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions throughout her career. In addition to the prestigious Chamber health care award and appointments to numerous boards, she received the Who’s Who award in several categories in multiple years, Miami Metro Magazine’s 100 Women to Watch, the Unsung Heroines Award from the City of Miami and the Outstanding Campus Administrator Award from the University of Texas at Austin among many others. She is also a published author and respected speaker.
On a related note, the Medical Center Campus is a finalist for the Chamber’s 2008 Health Care Heroes award in the Institution category.
