Women Artists Say “I DO” One More Time at Miami Dade College’s Tower Theater
Miami, Thursday, April 24, 2008 - Wedding dresses made from wire, palm fronds, leather, and seeds, among other materials, tell individual stories of ten women bound by three common themes: love, commitment and marriage. On Tuesday, April 29, at 7 p.m. Miami Dade College’s (MDC) InterAmerican Campus will present their work at an opening reception for the second annual “I DO, 2!” art exhibition, a collective art project by W-10 at the Tower Theater. The intricate dresses and related sketches will remain on display through May 19.
W-10 began a year ago with a group of ten Latin American female artists sharing their experiences in a portrait class at the InterAmerican Campus. The name W-10 derives from the number of women who originally comprised the class under the direction and mentorship of MDC professor Yovani Bauta, who is also the curator of the exhibition. These courageous women left their native countries and were forced to confront culture and language barriers to start over. For the “I Do, 2!” project, each made a wedding dress that reflects her life.
“These are women who have been married, they had children, established careers,” said Bauta. “Now they want to dedicate their lives to art.”
Today, the group has evolved into a fascinating form of female expression and now includes thirteen members who represent Nicaragua, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic, among other nations. In addition, some share heritage from other countries such Lebanon and Poland.
The Tower Theater Gallery is open from 6 to 9 p.m. on weekdays, 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Metered parking is free on weekends and after 6 p.m. weekdays.
