MDC Sharks, Eight-time NJCAA Champions, at Top of Pre-Season NJCAA Division 1 Women's Volleyball Poll
Miami, August 25, 2008 - Miami Dade College (MDC) begins the 2008 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Volleyball season as the nation's No. 1 team. The Sharks have won the national title four times since 1996 and have a total of eight national titles since 1986. Last season, the Lady Sharks finished as runners-up at the national tournament to Western Nebraska Community College, ending the season at 33-1.
The top five teams in the pre-season poll include Frank Phillips College (Texas), College of Southern Idaho, Iowa Western Community College and Blinn College (Texas).
Led by returning players Rosa Medrano, Monica Dos Santos and Nataly Gutierrez, the Sharks will open the season on Sept. 4 against Palm Beach Community College. On Sept. 9, they face off with Broward College at their home opener.
The NJCAA volleyball season officially begins today and will conclude with the NJCAA Division I Volleyball National Championship on Nov. 20-22 in Council Bluff, Iowa.
