Miami, November 19, 2008 -
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Miami Chapter will hold its 53rd Annual Architecture + Design Gala and Awards Ceremony at Miami’s architectural gem and historical landmark building, the Freedom Tower, at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus on Sat., Nov. 22, at 6 p.m.
The gala is the culmination of the AIA’s Celebrate Architecture 2008 during the month of Nov., which has featured tours, lectures, exhibitions and other activities and is also host to the Awards Ceremony for the top professionals in the Architecture and Design industry. MDC is one of the main sponsors of the Gala and the lecture series.
Works by the college’s architecture students will be on display at the Freedom Tower during the gala along with the works of students from other local institutions. This free exhibition, located on the Mezzanine level of the Freedom Tower, will be open to the public from 6pm until 10pm.
At last year’s gala, MDC showcased the first-ever architecture journal authored by MDC architecture professor, Mario F. Ortega, showcasing the students’ work, which received many accolades.
MDC’s School of Architecture has enjoyed a close working relationship with the AIA. In fact, MDC President, Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, was honored by the AIA last year with the Community Leadership Award. This year, the AIA is honoring Prof. Ortega with the Education Leadership Award. Caio Barboza, a Miami Dade College School of Architecture student, will also be honored this year with the Student of the Year Award.
