Miami, December 19, 2008 -
After a recent fierce competition in Brandenton, Fla., the Florida Community Colleges Press Association (FCCPA) honored Miami Dade College’s (MDC) InterAmerican Campus’ student magazine, Urbana, with the following accolades: First Place in Photography for Art and Photo Director Andrea Trabucco Campos; First Place for Contents Page for former Editor Cristian Larrocha; and Third Place for Art for Jhonatan Larrocha.
“This was a very competitive process, and it is almost unheard of for a magazine to do so well in its first year of publication,” said Urbana’s faculty advisor, Professor Emily Sendin. I am so proud of the hard work and talent of my students. Many thanks also go to Tony Delgado, director of Student Life, Manuel Lorenzo, associate dean, Isabel Hernandez, chief information officer, Dr. Carol Tulikangas, academic dean, and MDC InterAmerican Campus President Dr. Gina Cortes-Suarez, for their continuous support.”
Urbana is very unique as it is an online magazine that can be converted to paper form. This innovative magazine was brought about through the inspiration of Hernandez and Professor Sendin. Until Urbana, all of the student magazines at the College were paper-based. Between Professor Sendin and Hernandez, the Literary Club students learned the skills needed to put together an online magazine that they are extremely proud to call their own.
“We are proud of our students’ success in creating their first electronic arts magazine,” said Dr. Tulikangas. “We know that the future is going to require skills that we can only dream of, and we hope this magazine allows our students to get a head start on learning some of what they’ll need for a successful tomorrow.”
