MDC Chess Team to Compete in Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Tournament, Road to the Final Four Tourney

Miami, December 19, 2008 - The renowned Miami Dade College (MDC) chess team is gearing up to compete in the important Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Tournament Dec. 27 – 30 at the University of Texas at Dallas. This tourney is the qualifier for collegiate chess’ national championship in March, the Final Four, for which MDC’s squad has qualified six years straight.

For four days this month, MDC will face-off with defending champions, the University of Texas at Dallas, as well as the University of Maryland at Baltimore County, Stanford University and Harvard University among others. Recent MDC graduate, former team leader and captain, and grand master, Renier Gonzalez, will accompany the team to Dallas serving as coach.

This year, the MDC Chess Team has added two new members to its roster. The 2008-2009 squad consists of returning members Ernesto Alvarez, Charles Galofre, Michel Leon, Gilberto Luna, Devlin Sinclair, Alexander Villafuerte, and newcomers Dario Cruz and Maydelis Quesada.
Since its creation in 2002, the MDC Chess Team has enjoyed great success against the nation’s best teams. In 2004, the U.S. Chess Federation dubbed MDC the Chess College of the Year. In December 2005 and 2007, based partly on the strength of the chess team, MDC hosted the Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Tournament.  The MDC Chess Team also continues to be the only community college team to play well at the Pan American and make it consistently to the Final Four each year.
