MDC North Campus Celebrates United Nations' International Day of Peace
Miami, September 22, 2009 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus celebrated United Nations’ International Day of Peace on Sept. 21, 2009. Educational activities for students and the community took place as well as the opening of From a Culture of Violence to a Culture of Peace: Transforming the Human Spirit, a photographic exhibition provided by Soka Gakkai-USA.
“We are continuing in the tradition of celebrating the 27th Annual United Nations’ International Day of Peace,” said Dr. José A. Vicente, president of MDC’s North Campus. “It is a day to encourage the community to contemplate and communicate thoughts and activities on how to achieve peace.”
The highlight of the day was a panel discussion on Transforming Cultures of Violence to Cultures of Peace at the Lehman Theatre (Room 5120). Panelists included Shaikh Mulana Shafayat Mohamed from Darul Uloom Learning Center, Rabbi Leonid Feldmen from Temple Beth-El, Dr. Yvrose Beauregard from Yvonne Learning Center, Benjamin Carrillo, Youth Director - Soka Gakkai International-USA, and Yoshiko Yamada, Florida Student Division Representative - Soka Gakkai International-USA. The panelists participated in an interactive question and answer session.
Soka Gakki-USA, a non-governmental organization accredited by the United Nations for their mission of international peace and human security, is showcasing its photographic exhibition the North Campus William Lehman Theater’s vestibule. It is free and open to the public from September 21-25.
