Miami, November 13, 2009 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Lady Sharks Volleyball Team captured four straight victories last weekend, in Winter Haven, including a win over Pasco-Hernando Community College that sealed the Atlantic District Title for the Sharks and an impressive win over Hillsborough Community College that gave the Lady Sharks their incredible 35th Florida Community College Activities Association (FCCCA) state championship.

In addition to the dual championships, Head Coach Origenes “Kiko” Benoit was honored as the FCCAA Coach of the Year, following his award last week as the Southern Conference Coach of the Year for leading the team to an undefeated 12-0 record in the Conference.

“Coach Benoit is dedicated and has worked very hard to put together a championship team and he has proven to be a fantastic leader after just five seasons as head coach,” said James Cox, MDC athletic director. “But our student athletes deserve much of the praise for also dedicating themselves to both academic and athletic excellence by working extremely hard since early August to reach their goals of academic success and athletic championships.”

The Lady Sharks (27-4) will now participate in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championship tournament on Nov. 19-21, 2009 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Lady Sharks are seeded fifth in the tournament and will meet Panola Community College of Texas in the first round match on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. EST.

The MDC volleyball team is regarded as the most successful in the history of the NJCAA, having captured eight national championships and finishing as national runners-up 10 times. The team has failed to qualify for the national tournament only once since the College joined the NJCAA in 1976.

“The focus from this point on is to realize that all of the teams are starting at 0-0 at the nationals and whoever is playing their best at this time of the season will challenge for the national title,” Coach Benoit said. “I was very pleased with our performance at the District tournament, it was the best all-around play we had all season so that is an encouraging sign.”
