Miami, December 9, 2010 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) renowned School of Community Education at the North Campus is set to launch classical ballet classes immersed in Cuban culture. Acclaimed director and founder of the Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami, Pedro Pablo Peña will be directing the new program, Culture of Dance/Cultura de la Danza. In fact, MDC has been a long supporter of his International Ballet Festival of Miami.

Students will learn the basics of neo-classical and contemporary techniques, as well as correct classical ballet terminology and choreography.

A native of Cuba, Peña has danced for Havana’s Opera Ballet, the National Ballet of Cuba and the Musical Theater of Havana. He has also choreographed for Univision’s TV Show Sabado Gigante and the Warner Brothers film The Specialist starring Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone.

“We will be giving students the opportunity and ability to learn the real techniques of classical ballet,” said Peña.

Classes will be offered in Contemporary Ballet, Beginners Classical Ballet and Intermediate Classical Ballet beginning Saturday, Jan. 8 through April. Students eligible to take the class must be 14 years and up. The cost for each class is $150. A one-time class, Dance Movement and its Historical Concept, will be offered Thursday, Feb. 24, and costs $75.
