Miami, January 14, 2011 - Miami Dade College (MDC) has been awarded a grant from Citi Foundation to continue and expand the Small Business Education Program at the college, a viable training project for small business owners and potential entrepreneurs.

The grant will help MDC extend community outreach efforts by recruiting participants from low- income areas and offering workshops in English and Spanish. In previous years, the Citi Foundation has awarded the college grant dollars for similar entrepreneurial-based programs that were mostly targeted to minority business owners in inner-city neighborhoods. This year’s project, which is scheduled to take off in spring 2011, will target participants from Miami Gardens, North Miami, Opa-Locka, Little Haiti, Hialeah and Flagami.

“Over the years, our program has grown tremendously. In 2011, we will be offering ten workshops and expanding to four MDC locations in order to better serve the targeted areas,” said MDC North Campus President Dr. José A. Vicente. “We are prepared to reach more business owners from these highly commercial areas, as well as potential entrepreneurs who did not have the opportunity to attend in the past.”

Under this grant, MDC will offer free workshops in both English and Spanish, covering various topics, such as preparing an effective business plan, marketing and selling techniques, sources of funding, and how becoming a “green business” improves the triple bottom line.

The Citi Foundation grants awarded to MDC since 2007 have enabled the college to offer free workshops to hundreds of business owners in the fundamentals of operating and sustaining their businesses.
