Miami, March 30, 2011 - Another Miami Dade College (MDC) official has been tapped to represent the institution in a leadership capacity with a major organization.

Dr. Gina Cortés-Suárez, president of MDC’s InterAmerican Campus, was recently selected as a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Principles Review Committee.

This eight-person committee is charged with reviewing and revising the current SACS Principles of Accreditation language to meet the new federal regulations, as well as updating other general standards.

SACSCOC is the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the southern states.

Its mission is to enhance educational quality throughout the region – it strives to  improve the effectiveness of institutions by ensuring that institutions meet standards established by the higher education community that address the needs of society and students.

The commission serves institutions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia/a and Latin America and other international sites approved by the Commission on Colleges that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral degrees.

Having served MDC for nearly three decades, Dr. Cortés-Suárez is a lifelong educator who has held several key positions both at the college and within the local school district. The former elementary school teacher for Miami-Dade County Public Schools was appointed to The Children’s Trust Board of Directors in 2009.

Prior to becoming campus president in 2008, she served as the college’s associate provost for faculty initiatives. Dr. Cortés-Suárez’s accomplishments in higher education have made her a sought-after candidate for a variety of community projects for several years.
