Miami, March 21, 2011 - In one of the country’s most prestigious athletic competitions, a Miami Dade College (MDC) student and member of the women’s basketball team, Ashley Wilkes, was named the 2011 Southern Conference Player of the Year. Additionally, she was named to the 2011 All-State/All-Regional Team, the 2011 First Team All Southern Conference, and is now a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) award candidate.

For the last two seasons, Wilkes has been consistently ranked among the top players in the nation and, last year, was selected to participate at the NJCAA All-Star games in Pensacola, and was named to the Florida Community College Activities Association (FCCAA) All-State/All-Region team.

In addition to Wilkes, five other MDC student athletes were named to the 2011 All Southern Conference Team: Melanie Ducott (first team), Kandis Frederick (second team), Smiljana Cuk (second team), Tori Stephens (second team), and Kiana Morton (second team).
