MDC North Campus Faculty Selected for USDA Fellowship Program
Miami, April 18, 2011 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus mathematics faculty member, Lourdes M. España, has been selected to participate in the 2011 E. Kika De La Garza Fellowship Program with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The USDA E. Kika De La Garza Fellowship Program offers faculty and staff from Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) the opportunity to work collaboratively with USDA to gain insight and understanding of the federal government.
Fellows spend two to three weeks in Washington, D.C., to increase their understanding of the USDA and other federal agencies, particularly at the national level, and be able to identify mutual collaborative interests. Applicants must be faculty or staff at a HSI or high school to qualify and are selected from a competitive national group.
“I am extremely proud of Ms. España’s achievements. She has been afforded a rare opportunity to represent MDC nationally and bring back meaningful knowledge of the myriad of federal programs that can benefit our students,” said José A. Vicente, North Campus president.
This uniquely tailored experience brings together HSI staff and federal executives to address the spectrum of challenges faced in the development of a well-prepared Hispanic workforce.
Participants will be afforded the opportunity to learn best practices from other fellows and take part in programs to build institutional capacity.
