Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College to Host Summer Workshop for Talented Teen Writers
Registration is now open for the workshop that begins July 9-30; enrollment is limited
Miami, June 27, 2011 - Talented teen writers throughout South Florida will have the chance to further develop their literary skills and talents this summer during a workshop sponsored by the Florida Center for the Literary Arts (FCLA) at Miami Dade College (MDC).
Designed for accomplished student writers who will be enrolled in grades 9-12 this coming school year, the Summer Workshop for Talented Teen Writers will be held during four consecutive Saturday sessions beginning July 9, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and continuing on July 16, July 23 and July 30.
All workshop sessions will be held at the MDC Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.
Students will be expected to attend and participate in all four sessions and have their own transportation to and from the College. The cost to attend the workshop is $125 per student.
The sessions will be taught by nationally best-selling author Kristi Cook, (also writing as Kristina Cook and Kristi Astor), who has written nearly a dozen novels for teens and adults, ranging from historical and NASCAR romance to paranormal young adult fiction.
She has led writing workshops both locally and nationally at schools, libraries, and at the annual Romance Writers of America National Conference and RT Booklovers Convention.
In this workshop, Cook will guide student writers through the building blocks of creative writing by covering topics such as: gathering ideas for compelling stories; creating memorable characters; opening with a “bang;” writing dialogue that shines; meaningful point-of-view; revision skills; and much more.
By using both writing exercises and their own original work, the student writers will also learn how to use thoughtful criticism to improve their writing.
