Miami Dade College Student Athletes Picked in 2011 MLB Draft
Miami, June 10, 2011 - Continuing Miami Dade College’s rich legacy of producing some of baseball’s top players, five MDC student-athletes were selected during the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft.
This year, MDC had the highest-drafted player in South Florida - outfielder Brian Goodwin, who was the 34th pick overall by the Washington Nationals.
“I am so proud of our players and coaching staff,” MDC Head Baseball Coach Danny Price said. “We have a very proud past and a dynamic future ahead of us.”
Other MDC players who were drafted are:
Derek Law, right-handed pitcher, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 9th round.
Josue Montañez, left-handed pitcher, was selected in the 15th round by the Minnesota Twins.
Jorge Vega Rosado, shortstop, was picked in the 28th round by the Toronto Blue Jays.
Jharel Cotton, right-handed pitcher, was picked by the New York Mets in the 28th round.
Past star players from MDC include Bucky Dent, Mickey Rivers, Warren Cromartie, Mike Piazza, Steve Carlton, Odibie McDowell and many others. Current, star major-leaguers include Placido Polanco and Raul Ibanez.
MDC’s athletic teams have earned a total of 33 NJCAA titles, including 13 in women’s sports. Most recently, the college’s softball team became national champions and won the 2010 national fast-pitch softball championship.
