Miami, July 12, 2011 -
Miami Dade College (MDC) art students are well-known for their impressive results in collegiate competitions nationwide. Recently, MDC students Lester Sanchez and Luis Castañeda were the winners in the 2010-2011
League for Innovation’s National Student Art Competition that was held at the North Campus earlier this summer.
Sanchez, a North Campus student, won First Place/Juror’s Choice for his painting, El Techero, while Wolfson Campus’ Castañeda placed third for his untitled photograph. Both students will each receive award checks and certificates of national merit from the League for Innovation.
To select the winners for the League’s national competition, three jurors evaluated the artwork that included 95 pieces of art submitted by students from the 19 board colleges.
Three other MDC art students, who were named - alongside Sanchez and Castañeda - this past spring as finalists for the national competition, will also receive certificates for their participation.
They are: Erica Torres (Kendall Campus), Read Me, a mixed media work; Rhea Leonard (Kendall Campus), Self-Portrait, etching; and Melissa Gonzalez (New World School of the Arts), Still Life Study, an acrylic on canvas. A catalog of all the student entries is currently being produced by MDC and will be available to League members this fall.
