FPL President & CEO Armando Olivera to join Miami Dade College’s District Board of Trustees

Miami, February 17, 2012 - Florida Governor Rick Scott has appointed Florida Power & Light (FPL) President & CEO and community leader Armando J. Olivera to Miami Dade College’s (MDC) District Board of Trustees. He replaces Robert H. Fernandez whose term on the Board has ended.

MDC has a history of having dynamic and tireless Trustees who passionately help lead and represent the nation’s largest institution of higher education. They voluntarily give of their time and energies while serving on the Board and holding down major corporate positions. Today’s announcement is no exception.

Trustee Olivera has worked at FPL for four decades and has served as chief executive officer since 2003. He is also a member of the Cornell University Board of Trustees where he received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a member of the Florida Reliability Coordinating Council. He has been a member of the Florida Council of 100 since 2007 and served on the Enterprise Florida Board of Directors from 2004 through 2011.

“We welcome Trustee Olivera and know that his many years of corporate experience will be an invaluable resource to the College,” said Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, president of Miami Dade College. “He is also no stranger to MDC having helped spearhead many educational partnerships with the college throughout the years.”

With the expiration of his term, Trustee Fernandez leaves MDC’s Board.

“Trustee Fernandez has made innumerable contributions to the College. He will be missed, but will always be a part of the MDC family,” added President Padrón.

Olivera joins Helen Aguirre Ferré (chair), Armando J. Bucelo Jr. (vice chair),  Marielena A. Villamil, Benjamin Leon III, Marili Cancio, and Jose K. Fuentes on the MDC District Board.
