MDC Wolfson Campus Students Participate in Prestigious Theater Festival
MDC students at the Kennedy Center American College Region 4 Theater Festival
Miami, March 7, 2012 - At a recent Kennedy Center American College Region 4 Theater Festival in Daytona Beach, two Miami Dade College (MDC) Wolfson Campus students, Joel Alvarez and Laura Broughton, participated in the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Competition. They prepared scenes and monologues and were partnered with fellow students Domary Donascimiento and Carl Roa.
Alvarez and Broughton first impressed Festival representatives with their performances in The Mistakes Madeline Made, a production staged at the Wolfson Campus last November.
Wolfson Campus Associate Professor Joshua Braun went to the Festival with a total of nine students, including Alvarez and Broughton. In addition to the competition, students attended seven performances in four days, as well as a variety of workshops with topics including acting, playwriting, succeeding in the business of acting, dramatic theory, and stage movement. Wolfson Campus Student Life and the Wolfson Thespian Club, the new drama club, helped fund the trip.
“The festival is much more than a competition,” Prof. Braun said. “They get to make contacts and attend workshops with students from all over the country.”
