Popular Dr. Armando J. Bucelo Sr. High School Chess Tournament Once Again a Hit at Miami Dade College
Miami, March 23, 2012 - The Eighth Annual Dr. Armando J. Bucelo Sr. High School Chess Tournament was held recently at the Miami Dade College (MDC) Wolfson Campus and once again drew some of the region’s top chess players, with Miami Senior High School winning the contest.
Held in the Chapman Conference Center, 61 players from 17 high schools participated. Dr. Armando Bucelo Sr., the chess master for whom the tourney is named, and father of MDC Trustee and prominent Coral Gables attorney Armando Bucelo Jr., was on hand to address the players in a brief ceremony.
The top four places in the team competition were:
First Place: Miami Senior High School
Second Place: South Dade Senior High School
Third Place: John A. Ferguson Senior High Schoo
Fourth Place: Westland-Hialeah Senior High School
Scholarships were also awarded in these individual categories with the following results:
Overall Winner: Luciano Aguilar, Miami Palmetto Senior High School
Best 12th Grader: Raul Rodriguez, Miami Senior High School
Best 11th Grader: Michael Dembrow, Miami Palmetto Senior High School
Vilmelys Vilahu, Hialeah Senior High School
Best 10th Grader: Jonas Shomorony, Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School
Best 9th Grader: Yahya Bawaney, Coral Reef Senior High School
In the past, many of these players have gone on to play for MDC’s renowned chess team, which has consistently been one of the top chess squads in the country.
