Miami, May 24, 2012 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus’ cultural arts renaissance continues with the presentation of the first annual Mayor’s World Music Festival, being held May 22 – 24, 2012. The Festival is produced as a partnership between the College, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS). The Festival will culminate with the World Music Concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 24 at the North Campus’ Lehman Theatre. MDC alumnus and music impresario Emilio Estefan is scheduled to attend.

“Our community’s future success hinges on educating our next generation and preparing them for life outside of the classroom,” said Carlos A. Gimenez, Mayor of Miami-Dade County. “The Honors World Music Ensemble presents an incredible opportunity for our young residents to take their learning to another level, and I’m grateful to Dr. Ed Calle, Miami Dade College and the star-studded lineup of professional musicians who are making this program possible.”

The Mayor's World Music Festival promises to be a rousing gathering of some of the most talented young musicians in the community. Earning the opportunity to participate via instructor recommendation, students will interact with, learn from, and perform alongside Miami-Dade County-based Maestros/Mentors invited by Mayor Gimenez.

The Festival will provide a large and diverse group of outstanding M-DCPS high school and middle school students an unprecedented opportunity to study, rehearse, and present a concert representing a broad spectrum of Latin, African and Caribbean themed jazz and world music repertoire in a college environment and will include wind, string, vocal, percussion, and electronic music sections.

The concert promises to be a signature presentation, following two days of performance workshops and rehearsals, where a host of Grammy winners, nominees and legendary studio musicians and artists will grace the stage with more than 350 student musicians.

“Music is a universal language that not only serves to enrich but unite persons of diverse ages, backgrounds and walks of life. As such, the North Campus is proud of our institution’s role as an important cultivator and convener of arts and culture in South Florida,” said Dr. Jose A. Vicente, president of the North Campus.
