MDC’s Tower Theater to Host Miami’s Only Showing of Shut Up and Play the Hits
Miami, June 5, 2012 - The acclaimed documentary film Shut Up and Play the Hits will hit U.S. theaters for one night only on Wednesday, July 18. Miami’s only two showings of the film will be held at 7 and 9:30 p.m. at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Tower Theater in the heart of Little Havana. Online ticket sales begin on June 8.
Directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace, Shut Up and Play the Hits chronicles the band LCD Soundsystem's final days, leading up to and including their last show at New York's Madison Square Gardens on April 2, 2011. Two months earlier, LCD frontman James Murphy announced his decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of its popularity, but not before ensuring its legacy with the biggest and most ambitious concert of its career.
The film documents this once-in-a-lifetime performance and an intimate portrait of James Murphy as he navigates the lead-up to the show, the day after, and the personal and professional ramifications of his decision. It also includes performances of five LCD songs in their entirety (including "All My Friends" and "North American Scum") along with additional concert footage.
The nearly four-hour concert moved the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief. New York magazine called the event “a marvel of pure craft” and Time magazine stated “we may never dance again.”
Shut Up and Play the Hits was an official selection at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival; 2012 South by Southwest Film Festival, 2012 Hot Docs Canadian International Film Festival; 2012 Sundance London Film and Music Festival; and 2012 Ambulante Gira de Documentales.
Tickets cost $10 for general admission; $8 for MDC students and staff, seniors, and Miami Film Society Members. Free parking available in the lots behind the theater.
The Tower Theater at MDC has been dubbed as one of the “10 great places to see a movie in splendor” by USA Today.
