MDC’s Miami Culinary Institute Celebrates Julia Child on Sept. 15
The late legendary Chef Julia Child blazed a trail for new generations of culinary stars.
Miami, September 4, 2012 - In honor of the late legendary Chef Julia Child, the Miami Culinary Institute (MCI) at Miami Dade College (MDC) will present Celebrating Julia at 100, a series of presentations and gastronomic festivities on Saturday, Sept. 15, to commemorate what would have been her 100th birthday last month. The celebration will take place throughout MDC’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.
Presented in partnership with Les Dames d’Escoffier Miami, a worldwide philanthropic organization of women leaders in food, beverage and hospitality, the daylong celebration will include a cooking class with famed Chef Michelle Bernstein. In addition, Nancy Verde Barr will present and sign copies of her new book, Backstage with Julia, My Years with Julia Child, a memoir of her 18 years as Child’s executive chef and TV show producer. Following the presentations, MDC’s Freedom Tower will host a cocktail party birthday bash in tribute to Child, who passed away in 2004.
A Child-inspired intimate dinner party at MCI’s elegant Tuyo restaurant will crown the day’s events. Tuyo and MCI’s award-winning director of restaurants, Chef Norman Van Aken, has orchestrated a delightful five-course menu themed “An American in Paris” for the occasion. Net proceeds will benefit Les Dames d’Escoffier Legacy Awards and the Miami Culinary Institute Scholarship Fund.
Child’s influence at MDC began when she delighted audiences at the 1989 Miami Book Fair International to promote The Way to Cook, a monumental work that continued her devotion to introducing French cuisine and culinary technique to mainstream American audiences. Her visit planted the seed for culinary excellence at MDC, which last year opened the doors to its cutting-edge Miami Culinary Institute.
