Miami Dade College Physician Assistant Student to Attend National Medical Conference
MDC PA student Maureen O' Brien to present at American Academy of CHEST Physicians national conference
Miami, October 22, 2012 - Maureen O’ Brien, a second year physician assistant studies student in the Associate in Science program at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Medical Campus, has been selected to attend the American Academy of CHEST Physicians national conference Oct. 20 – 25 in Atlanta, Georgia. She presented as a first-year MDC PA student at last year’s conference.
O’ Brien is participating in the conference on behalf of the South Florida Asthma Consortium, a group composed of physicians, pharmacists, public health officials, and other health care professionals committed to reducing asthma disparities in Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe Counties. She will present her updated analysis and evaluation of the Managing Asthma Through Case Management in Homes (MATCH) program.
With a bachelor’s degree in science and technology, a specialization in international development and a master’s in public health, O’ Brien has worked as an epidemiologist with the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH). The work she and her staff did at MDCH was recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency and received a National Environmental Leadership Award in Asthma Management this year. She has been working in public health since 2004, and began her work with asthma in 2010.
“I always wanted to do a combination of clinical care and public health work, and so a PA degree was the best fit for me,” O’ Brien said. “I chose MDC because it has so many clinical partnerships in South Florida. The program has a great reputation in the medical community.”
