Miami City Hall Reporter Kathleen McGrory of The Miami Herald to Be Featured At January MDC Journalism Speaker Series Event

Miami, January 14, 2013 - Award-winning Miami Herald reporter Kathleen McGrory, who covers Miami City Hall, will be featured at the Miami Dade College Journalism Speaker Seriesat noon, Wednesday, Jan. 30 at the college’s Kendall Campus.
Before writing about local government, McGrory spent five years as the Herald's education writer. She has also covered police and breaking news for the paper's continuous news operation.
In 2007, she was named Florida's Young Journalist of the Year. The following year, McGrory won first place in the National Education Writing Awards for her coverage of a fight at Miami Edison Senior High. In 2009, she was recognized for her work chronicling the turnaround at Miami Central Senior High School.
Last year, McGrory was part of an investigative team that examined spending at South Florida charter schools. The series won second place in the National Headliner Awards.
The MDC Journalism Speaker Series was launched in February 2008 to create an exchange and learning opportunity for students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. To date, 43 journalists have participated in the series.
In addition to McGrory, this year’s lineup includes Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Frances Robles of The New York Times, Boston Globe political reporter, Noah Bierman, ESPN.com reporter, Israel Gutierrez, and Dallas Morning News editor and reporter, Selwyn Crawford.
Each program includes a presentation by the journalists and a 15-minute question and answer session.
All presentations are free and open to the public.
