Miami Dade College’s Music Business Professor, Dr. Ed Calle, Named King of the Carnaval 2013

Saxaphonist & MDC Professor, Ed Calle

Miami, February 26, 2013 - The faculty at Miami Dade College (MDC) has long been considered the backbone of the nationally respected institution winning countless awards and distinctions. Now, royalty can be added to the list of accolades. World-renowned saxophonist, MDC Professor Ed Calle, has been crowned King of Carnaval 2013! King Calle is known for his extraordinary ability to play bebop, Latin and contemporary jazz, and pop, and has lent his singular sound to Grammy award-winning albums by Frank Sinatra, Juan Luis Guerra, Arturo Sandoval, and Jon Secada, as well as on numerous television and motion-picture soundtracks.  In fact, he has been nominated multiple times for Grammys.

Born in Caracas to Spanish parents, it was obvious from the start that he was a natural musician. In addition to those mentioned above, Dr. Calle has recorded with and toured the world alongside legends including Tito Puente, Gloria Estefan, Juanes, Julio Iglesias, Lenny Kravitz, and Rhianna, among others. Two of his albums, Ed Calle Plays Santana and In the Zone both garnered a Latin Grammy Award nomination in 2005 and 2007, respectively. Dr. Calle owns and operates One-Take Recording Studios and leads the Fuego Caliente Latin Jazz Orchestra. He earned a Doctor of Higher Education Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, and has served as Music Business Professor and Chairperson of the Arts and Philosophy department at MDC’s North Campus.

To appreciate this master’s repertoire, Dr. Calle will be performing at Carnaval on the Mile on Saturday, March 2, at 4 p.m. with the World Music 5 and PALO! Ed Calle’s Full Orchestra Tribute to Gato Barbieri will take place on Sunday, March 3, at 8 p.m., at the Ponce South Stage. Located along Miracle Mile between Le Jeune Road and Douglas Avenue, in Coral Gables, Carnaval on the Mile is a cultural experience appealing to the senses – art, music, food, and festivities for everyone.
