Immigration Summit, March 7, to Highlight Education and Economics; Former US Secretary of Commerce, Carlos Gutierrez and MDC North Campus President to Speak

Former US Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez

Miami, February 26, 2013 - At a critical moment in the national debate on immigration reform, Miami Dade College (MDC), in conjunction with Global Jewish Advocacy (AJC) is hosting an immigration summit on March 7, from 8 a.m.-noon at the college’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami. This highly informative symposium will bring together an extraordinary group of influential stakeholders from sectors, such as business, labor, faith, education, healthcare and law enforcement-- who are all impacted by immigration policy.

Former US Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez and MDC North Campus President Dr. José A. Vicente are among the confirmed speakers, along with Darryl Carlton, CFO for the University of Miami Hospital; and Rolando Aedo, executive vice president, Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau. Panel discussions will highlight economics and education--two key themes that are central to immigration policy, and to South Florida.

MDC, the largest and most diverse college in the nation, has maintained a prominent and active role in various facets of immigration, especially in areas of education. In 2011, MDC North Campus President Dr. Jose Vicente was recognized as the White House “Champion of Change” for his role in the community as an education leader who is helping America rise to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

The Immigration Summit is part of the AJC’s high profile Bridging America Project, which provides communities with the skills and structures necessary to achieve local support for immigration reform and counter the anti-immigrant fervor with programs and public education.
