Miami Dade College Baseball is Heating Up!

Miami, March 22, 2013 - The Miami Dade College (MDC) baseball team is taking the state by storm. The latest Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) Region VIII Baseball Poll shows MDC Sharks are currently ranked No. 2 in the state. In the last National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Poll, they ranked No. 3 in the nation  

The Sharks boast a 25-5 record and are currently leading the Southern Conference with a 9-2 record. The team is currently hitting .372, has 259 runs, 225 RBI’s, and 19 team home runs.

The Spring 2013 roster includes 12 sophomores and 13 freshmen. The Sharks are led by freshman Victor Cartini, from Puerto Rico, who is currently hitting .372 avg, scored 30 runs and leads the team in RBI’s with 54, in home runs with 7 on the season. 

Also playing well for the Sharks is Omar Garcia from Orlando hitting .446 avg, 35 runs scored (leading team) and 15 RBI’s. On the mound, pitchers Ivan Palaez, Carson Baranik and Kyle Carter are key contributors to the teams ERA 2.76 and 233 strike-outs. Ivan Palaez, from Miami, holds a 1.7 ERA, 40 K’s, 4-2 record leads the team with the lowest ERA. Carson Baranik, from Louisiana, holds a 4-1 record, with 43 strike-outs (leading team), and 2.49 ERA while Kyle Carter, from Georgia, has 2.08 ERA, 26 K’s and an undefeated record of 4-0.

“Those guys are really playing hard, and that is the number one thing that the coaching staff and I preach,” said Head Coach Danny Price. “This year’s motto is always do more than what is expected of you.” 

The MDC baseball team will continue facing off with tough competitors in conference play until the end of April to qualify for the State/Region Tournament in May.
