Miami Dade College’s Professor Mildred Roqueta, Innovator within its Virtual College, Receives National Recognition for Her Efforts to Facilitate Learning for Minorities in Distance Education

Miami, March 15, 2013 - Miami Dade College(MDC) boasts some of the finest professors in the country. It comes as no surprise then, that one of its own was recognized for her leadership in distance education. Prof. Mildred Roqueta received the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education’s Distance Learning in Higher Education award. The award is presented to a Latino or Latina who has championed distance learning via online instruction, research, or the development of distance learning that impact Latino students in higher education.
Prof. Roqueta has been developing and teaching online classes at MDC since 1999. Two of her courses are ranked among the top ten courses in enrollment at MDC’s Virtual College. Prof. Roqueta received the 2003 Outstanding Online Course award from the Instructional Technology Council. Keeping the second-language learner in mind, her innovative teaching techniques engage students via podcasts, blogs, wikis, YouTube, and with other types of social media and technologies. This way, students can rewind, look up words, and otherwise make sure they understand the material so as to maximize their potential.
She will receive the coveted award during the AAHHE National Conference Awards Luncheon on Saturday, March 30, in Austin, Texas.
Prof. Roqueta holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in psychology, with a concentration in industrial/organizational psychology. She is currently completing her doctorate in Distance Education. She teaches psychology at MDC’s Kendall Campus.
