Miami, August 29, 2013 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC)’s School of Continuing Education & Professional Development has received an adult education grant of nearly $1.8 million from the Florida Department of Education. The amount, allocated for the 2013-2014 academic year, represents the largest Adult General Education (AGE) grant award the college has ever received and will help expand course offerings that provide the local community with much-needed training and skills.

“With an increase in funding this year, additional career advisors will be brought on board to assist adult education students with career exploration and transition to college credit and certificate programs,” said Charles McGinnis, director of MDC’s School of Continuing Education & Professional Development.

Over the past 15 years, MDC has received more than $18.1 million in AGE grant funds, helping nearly 40 adult education instructors and support staff deliver programs in areas such as English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Education Development preparation across six MDC campuses. As an integral part of MDC’s School of Continuing Education, the Adult Education program helps adults further their education at the post-secondary level, obtain employment, play positive roles in the education of their children, and become involved community members.

Last year, nearly 10,000 students were served in Adult Education classes.
