Miami, August 28, 2013 - One of Miami Dade College’s (MDC) youngest guitar students, nine-year-old Jimena Rodriguez, was recently praised for her musical prowess by legendary Spanish classical guitarist Pepe Romero. Upon hearing the budding musician play at his master class, the virtuoso praised Rodriguez’ technique and predicted that she should become “a truly wonderful, wonderful, wonderful guitarist”.

Rodriguez has been taking classical guitar lessons at MDC for two years in the College’s School of Continuing Education and Professional Development and attended Romero’s master class following his July concert in Coral Gables. The youngest musician in Romero’s class, Rodriguez played two classical pieces by Mateo Carcassi. Her talents shined amid college-age and professional musicians prompting Romero’s praise. He sat next to her, looked at the audience, and said: “Here we have a young girl who is really talented, incredibly talented and who already knows how to play.”

Jimena's instructor at MDC, Juan Carlos Vera, said that he was confident that the “great master” would recognize Jimena's remarkable talent. “It was a great pleasure to find myself discussing the future of this nine-year-old with one of the true giants in classical guitar,” Vera said.

“This is an exciting event for the Continuing Education guitar program, given the undisputed international stature enjoyed by Pepe Romero. Continuing Education classical guitar students are clearly achieving beyond their young years,” he added.
