Miami, October 24, 2013 - Miami Dade College’s The Reporter has been named the top state college student newspaper in Florida for the third straight year.

The Reporter staff placed in 16 of 18 individual categories – including ten first-place awards – at the recent Florida College System Publications Association awards banquet in Tampa. The paper has won 48 awards from the FCSPA in the past three years including 28 first-place honors.

This year’s competition was based on newspapers printed during the 2012-13 school year. The Reporter accumulated 41 overall points.

“I am so proud of The Reporter for all of its achievements in the past year,” said Karla Barrios, who served as the paper’s editor last year, and is currently a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, majoring in global studies. “It was [an] honor to have served as editor-in-chief. I feel incredibly proud of everyone who contributed and was part of our amazing staff.”

Gregory Castillo, who served as a senior photographer at The Reporter last year, and Gabriel Cacabelos, an illustrator on last year’s staff, both received an inner circle award for placing in the top three in at least three categories.

Castillo won four first-place awards: News Story, Feature Story, News Photo and Sports Photo. He has received eight first-place honors from the FCSPA during his career at The Reporter.

Cacabelos won two first-place honors: Illustration and Editorial Cartoon; and a second place award for Comic Strip.

The Reporter features 16 pages, prints on a biweekly schedule, has a circulation of 10,250 per print cycle, and is supplemented by a website with video and audio content. It is distributed at all eight MDC campuses and has newsrooms at the North, Wolfson and the Kendall campuses.
