Miami Dade College’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives Commemorates International Day of Human Rights, Dec. 9

Miami, November 26, 2013 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives (CLACI) and the Interamerican Institute for Democracy will host a panel discussion on Democracy, the Rule of Law, and Human Rights in Latin America, at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 9, at the Wolfson Campus. The event is presented in commemoration of the International Day of Human Rights.

Among the speakers featured will be Carlos Sánchez, Executive Director of the Interamerican Institute for Democracy, who will share his perspective on the current challenges to democracy, the rule of law, and human rights in Latin America and the Caribbean; Gisela Parraand Horacio Medina, Executive Secretary and Deputy Executive Secretary of the Democratic Unity Roundtable of Venezuela, respectively, in Florida, Georgia, and North and South Carolina, who will provide reports on the ongoing human rights violations in her country and those committed against the consular rights of the Venezuelan community in Florida; and Luis Felipe Rojas, an independent journalist and writer, who will address the struggle for freedom of information in his native Cuba, at the dawn of the new digital age.

The event is free and open to the public and will be conducted in Spanish. Free parking is available in Building 7’s garage located at 500 NE Second Ave (entrance on Fifth Street).
